Green Cement – the way of the future?

When surfing the Internet last week to see what’s trending in the Cape Town construction sector:  the words ‘Green Cement’ kept appearing. 

Wikipedia states that green cement is a cementitious material that meets or exceeds the functional performance capabilities of ordinary Portland cement by incorporating and optimizing recycled materials, thereby reducing consumption of natural raw materials, water, and energy, resulting in a more sustainable construction material.

WOW!! 

Who knew that everyday cement manufacturing is a major source of greenhouse gases! We all need to become more conscious about what impact building has on the environment and a product like green cement  is surely going to take off as a greener alternative. 

According to Smithers Pira, green cement production accounts for 3.5% of global cement, but is forecast to grow to over 13% of the market by 2020. So watch this space!
